Schefflera actinophylla – Australian Umbrella Tree Care & Info Guide
Horty Hints
Forget the cosy corner – actinophylla is a boundary buster. With a bushy, wide reaching growth pattern, this tropical beauty needs space to spread.
If the leaves are turning black before dropping, the plant has been overwatered. Allow the top 2 inches of soil to dry out before watering.
Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep your Umbrella Tree looking fresh and feeling fine.
Light
Schefflera actinophylla is best grown in bright, indirect light to partial shade. Insufficient light may cause leggy growth.
Watering
Water when the soil has become slightly dry. Water thoroughly and allow to drain freely. They like to be moist but not wet. Do not leave sitting in water.
Temperature
The Australlian Umbrella Tree enjoys normal household conditions: between 15°C and 24°C. Avoid cold draughts.
Humidity
Scheffleras do well in normal home humidity, however, they will thrive in higher-humidity environments. Mist occasionally or relocate to the kitchen or bathroom for an added boost.
Feed
Feed once a year or so with a balanced fertiliser during the growing period.
Height & Growth Rate
The Schefflera actinophylla Tree is a fast-growing plant. In optimum conditions it can reach an ultimate height of around 4.5 metres, with 2 – 2.5 metres fairly common. Note sideways sprawls of 1 – 1.2 metres in width are also expected of this green giant.
