Ruched ribbons of curled and pleated leaves stream from the base of this plant with a quirky irregularity, giving the Hoya Carnosa Compacta a vibrant, lively personality. The randomized mix of greens from the lighter underside and glossy topside of the foliage run along the vines, acting as a backdrop for the elegant spheres of blush, star-like flowers.
Hoya carnosa Compacta Care & Info Guide
Horty Hints
Cover that Couch! Hoya flowers produce drops of sticky nectar that may drip. This is completely normal, but remember to protect your furniture.
When to water! If the leaves seem a little too folded or puckered, the plant is asking for a drink.
Bring on the Blooms! This plant needs heat, humidity and very bright light to flower. A bathroom with a southern exposure is the winner.
Light
Needs very bright, indirect light. All day sunlight will scorch the leaves. Will benefit from some early morning or late afternoon sunshine. Can cope in light shade but unlikely to bloom. Does well under artificial light making it ideal for office environments.
Watering
Hoya are succulents and store water. Allow the top half of the soil to dry out between watering, then water deeply and allow to drain thoroughly. Do not over-water, as too much water will kill the plant. Water sparingly in winter.
Temperature
Happy in room temperatures from 18-24°C. Avoid draughts and extreme temperatures. Prefers to be kept warm (above 16°C).
Humidity
Prefers higher levels of humidity. Ideal in bathrooms and kitchens.
Feed
Apply a weak general-purpose fertiliser during the summer.
Height & Growth Rate
Fast growing, reaching lengths of 6m in the wild. Expect trails up to 3m indoors. Prune in spring to maintain desired length.
Toxicity
Sap contains latex which is a skin irritant and is considered toxic, therefore keep away from children and animals.
Origin
Hoya carnosa Compacta originates from Eastern Asia and Australia.
