Looking for a cool, funky, alien vibe? How about a Spiralled Cereus cactus. The blue-green colour and spiralling, columnar form is out of this world and very easy to look after.
Younger plants begin life with straight ribs that twist at about 10cm. The ribs are covered in spines which can be variable in length. Flowers are pink or white, with long delicate petals.
Also sometimes known as Cereus peruvianous tortulosus, with common names including Twisted Cereus and Contorted Cereus.
Cereus forbesii spiralis – Spiralled Cereus Care & Info Guide
Horty Hints
Less is more! Allow your spiralis’ soil to dry-out completely in between watering. Water sparingly to avoid root and stem rot.
Shade-seeker! Surprisingly, this cactus prefers to stay out of the direct sunlight. Seek an area with plenty of light, or with occasional shade during the day for best results.
Life-size! Despite its adorable size, with room to grow, the Spiralis can eventually reach heights of around 2 metres!
Light
This cactus prefers bright light and is happy with some direct sunlight once established, however, be aware that too much direct sun may cause scorching.
Watering
Cereus forbesii is drought tolerant. Water sparingly once the soil has dried-out to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to waterlogged roots and create the perfect conditions for rot to take hold.
Temperature
The Spiralled Cactus will do well in average household temperatures: typically 16-24°C. It can tolerate lower temperatures, but to avoid harming your plant, keep it above 8°C.
Humidity
Unlike other tropical plants, this cactus will tolerate drier spaces, but may suffer in areas with typically high humidity. Keep out of steamy rooms like the kitchen and bathroom.
Feed
Feed with cactus and succulent fertilizer during the summer months.
Height & Growth Rate
Cereus forbesii spiralis is a fast growing cactus which, once fully grown, can reach a height of around 2m to 3m.
Toxicity
This cactus is not considered toxic – however the spines are sharp, so please take care when handling the plant.
Origin
While the Spiralled Cereus itself is a cultivar, the species Cereus forbesii originates from South America.
